Cathy Locke - Fine Art Portrait Painter

I would like to thank you for visiting my site and inquiring about my work!

I worked as an award winning art director and commerical illustrator for over 20 years, before becoming a full time fine arts painter. Today I split my time between commission portraits and gallery painting. My work is exhibited in juried exhibitions and galleries nationally. I am very proud to be the 2005 West Coast Pastel Society’s Best of Show winner for a pastel portrait that was shown in their International Exhibition. Other honors I have received include Best of Show for the 2003 Women Artists of the West Show, 2nd Place for the 2004 Pastel Society of Florida, Merit Award at the 2004 West Coast Pastel Society, as well as The Art Directors Club, Merit Award, and the California Arts Show, Award of Excellence for my commercial work. My work is collected by numerous private patrons, as well as St. Mary’s College in Moraga, California.

I have a BFA from Art Center College of Design, and am currently working on my MFA at the Art Academy in San Francisco. My final MFA thesis is on The Journey of Birth which focuses on portraiture and figurative work. I have studied with Bob Gerbracht, Jove Wang, Craig Nelson and Zhaoming Wu. I have also studied at the Art Academy of Paris, with special study in the Louvre, the Tate Gallery in London. In addition I had the honor of studying Russian painters at the Art Academy of Russia, Russian Museum, the Hermitage and The National Museum of Russian Fine Art, the State Tretyakov Gallery, in St. Petersburg and Moscow, Russia.

Statement
My paintings are driven by light, how light affects a subject matter. For this reason I tend to paint a broad range of subjects from people to cityscapes. I am more interested in capturing a feeling then staying with one subject matter. Whether its the early morning light on city roof tops, or the way the light hits a glass vase, I am searching for a special moment. I describe light in my paintings through a strong color and value theme, building layers to create depth. Though I primarily work in pastels and oils, I have used every type of medium at one point in time. As an artist, I believe it is important to always explore new ways of translating that special feeling that turns a canvas into poetry.

Classes

Capturing the Spirit of Portraiture
I teach this very unique class for art organizations by request and at the College of Marin on Saturdays.

This class will explore traditional portrait drawing and painting, with an emphasis on capturing the true spirit of the person. There will be demonstrations, lectures and one-on-one instruction. You will work on one portrait for three consecutive weeks, from a clothed model, and have the option of working with the model’s head and shoulders or full figure.

For information call the studio at 415-893-9292 or e-mail me at info@cathylocke.com.

Private Lessons

I work one-on-one with students who want to develop the quality of their work. We will work together to focus on your direction and painting style. My one-on-one private lessons are very intensive, for each time we get together the student will be given homework assignments that can take up to 10 hours to complete. For this reason I recommend only doing one or two private lessons a month. You will be responsible for your own models or subject matter. We will look at artists from history to current time that the student would benefit from studying. These lessons will be totally catered to the student’s individual needs and will set up goals and bench marks to reach. Lessons will last for one hour, they will be at my studio in Novato, and will cost $100/lession. Any questions feel free to contact me.
